Having a website is just like having a house, work never finishes on it, similarly in your house there’s always something to do or change. So what do you do? do you get a professional in to carry out the work and changes or do you pull up your selves and give an attempt yourself.

Now running a website, you need some basic knowledge on how things work on your site, whether its a CMS site or a basic static website put together using basic HTML. As a business owner you want to be able to manage your site with ease. Unless you have some knowledge about the internet, website and its features you probably want be able to manage anything never the less attempting to make any changes.

As a business owner what basic things should I learn to do without having to call in the professionals?

Content: The most important thing on your website, once your website is up and running, the first thing I would recommend in learning is how to manage the general content of your website. There maybe times where you just need to update a paragraph or some contact details, and getting your web developer to do this either cost you or may mean waiting around until he gets time to update it.

Take some time out or educate one of your employees to understand how to update basic content such as:

  • Text
  • Images of your gallery
  • Contact information
  • Banners

This will give you the knowledge of how your site works, and also give you flexibility to control your content.

Basic SEO: We all want our websites to rank higher in search results and get more traffic, as more traffic means more conversions and more sales. When managing the text of your website having some basic understanding on how search engines indexes pages and what points to keep in mind when putting together content. Also understanding how Socail Media, Search Engines and your website all link together, will give you a better understanding on what your SEO company is doing and why, along with where you can assist them.

General Features of your website: Depending on what type of site you have, having the knowledge to manage all the features of your website such as:

  • Updating products on e-commerce site
  • Sending out newsletters to your mailing list
  • Updating a blog

Overall having some basic knowledge to manage your website will not just save you money but also time and improve efficiency within your business. Also understanding  some basic SEO and working with your SEO company will give you a bigger picture of what is involved and where you can give your input in your internet marketing campaign.

Conclusion

So does this mean you need to know everything about your website, and know how to do all these technical stuff. No…it doesn’t. What you need to know is the basics, and have a brief overview. Just like in your business you know how things work in each department, or in each sector, but you necessary don’t do these tasks, but you know a brief overview of it. Same thing applies, if you’re serious about your online business, you need some background knowledge.
