Do you sometimes feel that your just being over worked, whether it maybe by your employee, your clients, your family, and sometimes you wish that you had more time in a day, as its seems you are just chasing time, and everything around you may just get a bit too over loaded, and you seem that you are losing control of everything. This happens sometimes when you have too much to do, or you have a strict dead line to meet. This can all effect your input into your work, and most of the times it can seem that your work is not getting completed, and your being buried into your tasks to complete…..I know how you feel, it's okay. You can easily over come this.
We have just had a new family member born last week (my Baby Boy "Zayd"), and for the first couple of days, it did seem to me that I was being over worked, where I was fully taking care of my first child, and wife, on top of ensuring my day to day business was on track. It was tough, but I'm glad everything has gone well so far.
Being in this situation is not healthy, especially when you are carrying out the work and you seem to be physically there but mentally not there. There are something's that you can do to ensure that you do not get over worked, and have a good healthy balance, also ensuring that you are fully control of what you do.
How do I ensure that I am not overworked
Strict Time Schedule: Having a strict time table helps allot, which guidelines and plans your full day out. So that you are focused on what you want to achieve that particular day, and you prioritise your tasks. Deal with the important things first.
Change: Sometimes changes are good, if you find yourself in the same environment day in day night, you can mentally get tired, and also frustrated. Take regular changes, whether it may mean that working away from your office, or home. Change can also mean, not working one day which you normally would work, like a Wednesday's. So maybe take a day off, and spend the day with your family.
Delegate: Many of times we may want to take control of EVERYTHING, and be a control freak….I know I do sometimes… but for the good for yourself and for the business, its best to delegate some of your tasks. Whether it may be to a colleague, employee, friend, family or even outsource. This will free up some of your own time to take a break, or even to work on other important aspects of your business. To run a successful business, you cant do everything yourself. You will end up over worked, and your quality of work will reduce. Hence delegating is always a good healthy option.
Family days: "Work is not everything" – what my mum says, and it's true. You need to ensure that you have plenty of time for your friends and family, the people that are important in your life. Work will never finish, but the time lost with your family will never come back. Dedicate a certain day in a week or a month that you would spend with your loved ones. You can work for years and years, and still have work left over. But the time spent with your loved ones, will be appreciated by all, and also stay with you forever.
To Do List: I'm not the first to say this, but having a well constructed To Do List, not only ensures that you stay productive and aim to complete all of your tasks, but it also helps from you burring out. As you will have a list of things to complete, you know exactly what you need to do, so that you save time and work on task that are important.
Exercise: Depending on the type of work you do, you may get very little exercise, especially like myself, I spend my whole day on a chair in front of the computer. – Not Healthy at all. Take some time out to go and get some fresh air and do some exercise, whether it's a walk in the part, swimming or even playing Tennis. I prefer to play tennis over the weekends and regular walks throughout the week on my lunch breaks. By doing so, you feel fresh and also helps with your productivity. Saying this, I'm off to swimming with my daughter tomorrow.
Diet: By not eating the right amount, or not eating when you should be eating, also plays a part in your stress level. Ensure that you eat when you should do (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) and also take frequent intake of fluids.
